COBRA THE ANIMATION: The Psycho-Gun

Cobra the Animation: The Psycho-Gun was produced in 2008 by Studio Magic Bus to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Buichi Terasawa's iconic manga series. This four-episode original video animation series was created to return the franchise to its roots, specifically adapting the classic Psycho-Gun arc with a modern aesthetic that remained faithful to Terasawa's original art style. The project was helmed by the author himself, who served as director and screenwriter, ensuring that the tone—a blend of space opera and retro-futuristic pulp fiction—remained consistent with the 1982 original series.

The animation design sought to balance contemporary digital techniques with the hard-boiled, character-driven narrative that defined the character of Cobra in the late 1970s. By focusing on the signature Psycho-Gun, an weapon grafted into the protagonist's left arm, the production emphasized the high-stakes, gunslinging nature of the source material. Upon its release, the OVA was generally well-received by long-time fans who appreciated the high-fidelity update to the character models, marking a successful effort to reintroduce the space pirate to a new generation while honoring his enduring legacy in the cyberpunk and science fiction genres.
