Where it came from
The Cobra Time Drive is a 2009 original video animation (OVA) produced by the Japanese studio Magic Bus. It serves as an installment in the long-running Space Cobra franchise, which was originally created by manga artist Buichi Terasawa in 1978. This entry was produced to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the series, aiming to capture the space-opera aesthetic and retro-futuristic charm that defined Terasawa's original vision of a cigar-smoking, cynical space adventurer.
The production sought to balance traditional animation techniques with a modern sheen, maintaining the pulp science fiction sensibilities of the late 1970s while adapting them for a contemporary audience. By revisiting the classic character design—notably the iconic Psychogun embedded in the protagonist's left arm—the studio catered to longtime fans of the franchise. It was generally received as a nostalgic tribute that remained faithful to the series' roots in French comic-influenced visual storytelling.
