There is a world in which an endless rain of dark ash fills the sky, and covers the earth. Humanity, fearing the ash that burns and melts away human flesh, had no choice but to cover themselves in protective suits, and their faces with gigantic masks. Bundled up in their suits and hidden away behind their masks, the people have fled deep within the underground. This is the story of the children growing up in this fearful world, this is "COCOLORS".

Where it came from
COCOLORS is a 2017 short film produced by the Japanese studio Kamikaze Douga, known for their distinct fusion of 3D computer graphics and traditional hand-drawn aesthetics. The project was conceived as part of the studio's broader exploration into non-photorealistic rendering, aiming to craft a visual language that felt organic despite its digital foundation. It was developed with a clear atmospheric intent, focusing on a post-apocalyptic world buried in ash, which necessitated a muted, textured color palette to convey a sense of claustrophobia and environmental decay.
The film was directed by Toshihisa Kaiya, who sought to emphasize the emotional connection between two children surviving in a subterranean shelter while hiding the reality of the outside world from them. Upon its release, it was noted for its unique visual approach, which prioritized mood and world-building over conventional narrative pacing. It stands as a significant technical showcase for Kamikaze Douga, reflecting the studio's commitment to pushing the boundaries of what anime can achieve through specialized digital techniques.
