Where it came from
Coicent was released in 2010 as a distinctive entry in the Anime Mirai project, an initiative funded by the Japanese government's Agency for Cultural Affairs to support young animators and preserve traditional production techniques. Directed and written by Shuhei Morita at Studio Sunrise, the short film served as a creative experiment in blending traditional 2D animation sensibilities with modern visual storytelling. It was designed to showcase the artistic potential of short-form animation within a collaborative industry framework.
The project was lauded for its striking aesthetic, which utilized bold color palettes and stylized character designs to create a dreamlike, futuristic atmosphere. Morita, who would later gain significant recognition for his Academy Award-nominated work, aimed to evoke a sense of nostalgic wonder within a science fiction setting. Upon its release, critics noted the film for its technical proficiency and its ability to construct a compelling, contained narrative arc within the constraints of an OVA format.
