Where it came from
Collar×Malice: deep cover is a two-part animated film project released in 2023, serving as a cinematic adaptation of the popular otome visual novel series originally developed by Otomate and Idea Factory. Produced by Studio DEEN, these films condense the complex investigative narrative of the original game, which follows a police officer caught in a series of violent incidents in Shinjuku, into a focused theatrical format that explores the tension between justice and vigilantism.
The character designs for the project were adapted for animation by Yukie Akiya, building upon the original art style established by illustrator Mai Hanamura. The production team aimed to retain the suspenseful, noir-inspired atmosphere of the source material while navigating the challenges of summarizing a lengthy, multi-branching narrative for a standalone film experience. Upon release, it was received primarily as a dedicated extension for the established fanbase of the franchise.
