Color Cycling

Color cycling is a foundational graphics technique that rose to prominence during the 8-bit and 16-bit computing eras of the 1980s and 1990s. Developed as a way to simulate animation on hardware with limited processing power and strict color palettes, it functions by rapidly rotating the indices of the palette lookup table, creating the illusion of movement—such as flowing water, flickering neon, or shimmering light—without the need to redraw individual frames.

The technique was famously mastered by artists like Mark Ferrari, who pushed the visual boundaries of the VGA era. Ferrari’s work, particularly his landscapes for LucasArts games, utilized color cycling to imbue static backgrounds with dynamic life. By carefully engineering textures to respond to specific palette shifts, these designers achieved atmospheric depth that felt remarkably fluid, cementing color cycling as a hallmark of early digital aesthetic culture.
