D-spray

D-spray was released in 2013 as a niche OVA project produced by Schoolzone. It emerged during a period of experimentation within independent Japanese animation, where smaller studios sought to explore surrealist or avant-garde themes outside the constraints of mainstream television production. The project was primarily intended as a visual exercise, focusing on stylized character designs and a distinct, vibrant color palette that prioritized aesthetic mood over traditional narrative structure.

The animation direction and character styling for the production were handled by a small team at Schoolzone who aimed to capture a specific atmospheric tension through unconventional frame pacing and digital compositing techniques. Upon its release, the OVA was received largely as a cult oddity, noted by enthusiasts of experimental media for its idiosyncratic tone and the studio’s willingness to push against standard visual tropes. It remains a documented example of the experimental output characteristic of Schoolzone’s early 2010s period.
