Where it came from
Released in 1998, the DS Anime Soushuuhen '98 served as a promotional compilation OVA produced by Studio Compile. It was designed to highlight the studio's portfolio during a period when their Puyo Puyo and Madou Monogatari franchises were at the peak of their cultural relevance in Japan. The project functioned as a retrospective media piece, consolidating character animations and narrative clips from their various game adaptations to engage the dedicated fanbase that had grown around their idiosyncratic art style.
The animation and presentation reflect the transition period of mid-to-late 90s digital and cel-hybrid production. Studio Compile prioritized a high-energy, vibrant aesthetic that echoed the frenetic pacing of their puzzle games. While intended primarily as a marketing tool and a celebratory item for loyal players, it is regarded by collectors today as a time capsule of the studio's peak output before their eventual restructuring in the early 2000s.
