Where it came from
Da Yuzhou Shidai, or The Three-Body Problem, is a 3D animated series produced by bilibili and based on the Hugo Award-winning science fiction trilogy by Liu Cixin. The project represents a significant effort within the Chinese animation industry to adapt high-concept hard science fiction for a mass digital audience. It was released as a streaming ONA, aiming to capture the dense, cosmological scope of the original novels through modern CGI techniques.
The series was designed to translate the complex physics and vast timelines of Liu Cixin's narrative into a visual medium, often drawing inspiration from contemporary digital aesthetics popular in Chinese animation. Upon its release, it garnered substantial attention for the sheer ambition of its source material, though it faced rigorous critical scrutiny from both fans of the books and broader audiences regarding its adaptation choices, character development, and the pacing of its intricate plot.
