Where it came from
Da Yu Hai Tang, known internationally as Big Fish & Begonia, originated as a 2004 flash animation short by directors Liang Xuan and Zhang Chun. The project was conceived as a meditation on Chinese mythology, specifically drawing inspiration from the Taoist classic Zhuangzi. After securing funding through an early crowdfunding campaign in 2013, the B&T Studio expanded the short into a feature-length film that blends hand-drawn 2D animation with 3D digital environments.
The film's visual design is widely noted for its integration of traditional Chinese architectural elements and cultural motifs, such as Fujian Tulou, set against a surreal, mystical backdrop. Upon its 2016 theatrical release, it was praised for its ambitious artistic vision and atmospheric score, which sought to bridge the gap between ancient folklore and modern narrative structure, ultimately becoming a significant milestone in contemporary Chinese animation.
