Where it came from
Dancougar: Requiem for Victims was produced by Ashi Productions as the first of several original video animation (OVA) sequels to the 1985 television series Super Beast Machine God Dancougar. Released in 1986, the project was designed to capitalize on the cult following the original series garnered, offering a more mature and concise narrative experience. It serves as a bridge between the complex, often chaotic storytelling of the TV run and the more polished approach favored in the later OVA series.
The production sought to refine the aesthetic established by the television series, focusing on a darker tone that emphasized the personal costs of the ongoing war against the Muge Empire. Masami Obari, whose kinetic and stylish animation work had become a hallmark of 1980s mecha anime, contributed significantly to the visual flair of the sequences. While the reception was mixed among casual viewers due to its somber pace, it remained a significant touchstone for fans of the 'real robot' subgenre who appreciated the series' shift toward character-driven drama.
