Where it came from
Date A Live II was produced by studio AIC Plus+ and released in 2014 as the direct sequel to the 2013 anime adaptation of Kōshi Tachibana's light novel series. The show operates within the harem and science-fantasy genres, focusing on the protagonist Shidō Itsuka and his efforts to seal the powers of ethereal beings known as Spirits by causing them to fall in love with him. This installment expands the narrative by introducing the Yamai sisters and Miku Izayoi, continuing the central aesthetic of combining high-stakes action with character-driven light novel tropes.
The character designs were handled by Satoshi Ishino, who adapted Tsunako’s original illustrations from the source material. Ishino aimed to maintain the distinct, ornate visual style of the light novels, which emphasizes elaborate costumes and individualistic color palettes for each Spirit. Upon its release, the series was received as a continuation of the established franchise momentum, appealing primarily to fans of the light novel medium who sought to see the complex character designs and supernatural combat sequences brought to life through animation.
