Where it came from
The DAYS OVA was released in 2017 as a direct companion to the television anime adaptation of Tsuyoshi Yasuda’s popular soccer manga. Produced by studio MAPPA, these episodes were designed to expand upon the character development established in the main series, focusing on the team dynamics and personal stakes of the Seiseki High School soccer club. The project was intended to offer fans additional narrative depth and lighthearted downtime for the protagonists, Tsukushi Tsukamoto and Jin Kazama, bridging the gap between the primary competitive arcs.
The animation reflects the high-energy, detail-oriented style characteristic of MAPPA’s work during this period, emphasizing fluid movement during soccer sequences and expressive character interactions. By maintaining the same creative team as the television series, the OVA preserved the visual consistency and tone that fans had come to associate with the franchise. It was received as a welcomed supplemental piece of the series, catering primarily to the dedicated audience that had followed the journey of the Seiseki team through the original broadcast run.
