Dirty Pair

Dirty Pair originated as a series of light novels by Haruka Takachiho, first published in 1979, which were subsequently adapted into a 24-episode television anime series by Sunrise in 1985. The narrative follows Kei and Yuri, two agents of the World Welfare Works Association known as the 'Lovely Angels,' who gain the eponymous nickname 'Dirty Pair' due to the catastrophic collateral damage that typically follows their successful missions. The show is set in a high-tech future and was produced during a period when Sunrise was refining its approach to action-comedy within the science fiction genre.

The character designs were handled by Tsukasa Kotobuki, who emphasized a vibrant, lighthearted aesthetic that balanced the series' explosive action sequences with the comedic chemistry of the leads. The production was well-received for its polished animation quality and the engaging, banter-heavy dynamic between its protagonists, eventually becoming a cult classic that helped define the 'space opera buddy-cop' trope in mid-1980s Japanese animation.
