Where it came from
Released in 1985, Dirty Pair: Affair of Nolandia serves as the debut original video animation for the beloved franchise based on Haruka Takachiho's light novels. Produced by Studio Nue, the project was part of a golden era for high-concept science fiction anime, aiming to capture the chaotic energy and character chemistry of the original source material. It introduced audiences to the iconic duo of Kei and Yuri, the 'Lovely Angels,' tasked with navigating complex interplanetary troubles.
The animation was crafted by the talented team at Studio Nue, who emphasized a vibrant, action-oriented aesthetic that defined the mid-eighties aesthetic. The production was well-received by fans for its polished character designs and lighthearted, high-stakes storytelling, effectively bridging the gap between the novels and a broader visual medium. It solidified the franchise's identity as a staple of the 'bubblegum' sci-fi subgenre, blending sharp humor with fluid, cinematic sequences that set a template for future installments.
