Where it came from
D-Matsu-san was released in 2018 as a comedic ONA spin-off of the popular Mr. Osomatsu series. It was created to expand on the franchise's absurdist humor, specifically focusing on the character Todomatsu and his attempts to maintain a sophisticated social life. The short-form format was designed to offer quick, bite-sized episodes that captured the erratic energy of the original anime while allowing the studio to experiment with tighter, more focused gags.
The animation was produced by Studio Pierrot, continuing their long-standing work on the Osomatsu-san franchise. The design aesthetic intentionally maintains the stark, retro-inspired minimalism of the parent series, contrasted with the characters' moments of extreme, grotesque exaggeration. Upon release, it was received as a lighthearted supplement for dedicated fans, praised primarily for its ability to condense the series' signature cynical comedy into a compact narrative structure.
