When the Divine Gate opened, the living world, the heavens, and the underworld became connected, ushering an era of chaos where desires and conflict intersect. To restore order, the World Council is formed. As peace is restored, the Divine Gate becomes an urban legend.
In that world, boys and girls deemed fit by the World Council are gathered. They are ones who aim to reach the gate for their personal objectives. Those who reach the gate can remake the world.
What lies beyond the gate? When they reach the door, will the world change? Will it be the past that changes, or will it be the future?

Where it came from
Divine Gate was produced by Studio Pierrot and premiered in 2016 as an adaptation of the popular mobile puzzle-RPG developed by Acquire. The series was designed to translate the game's distinctive aesthetic and expansive lore, which focuses on a group of gifted individuals known as 'selectors' attempting to reach the titular gate, a mythical location capable of reshaping the world. The adaptation sought to capture the game's stylish, gothic-inspired character designs while weaving together an ensemble narrative across a high-stakes, supernatural backdrop.
The animation direction and character styling aimed to maintain the sharp, stylized visual identity of the source material, which is heavily influenced by modern Japanese fashion and abstract environmental design. Upon release, the series was noted for its experimental visual flair and dense world-building. While it received a mixed reception from critics regarding its narrative pacing and complex plotting, it remains a notable example of the trend during the mid-2010s of adapting mobile gacha games into serialized television anime.
