Where it came from
Dongguo Xiansheng, or Master Dongguo and the Wolf, was produced in 1985 by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio. The film serves as an adaptation of a classic Chinese fable dating back to the Ming Dynasty, intended to caution against misplaced compassion toward those who are inherently treacherous. The production reflects the studio's mid-1980s focus on blending traditional Chinese moral parables with distinctive, localized animation techniques.
The film employs a traditional paper-cut animation style, a hallmark of the Shanghai studio that provides a unique, textured aesthetic reminiscent of shadow puppetry. Designed by artist Hu Jinqing, the aesthetic aimed to honor folk art traditions while maintaining the fluid storytelling requirements of feature-length animation. It was well-received upon its release for its faithful adherence to the source material and its technical prowess in the realm of experimental, culturally grounded animation.
