Where it came from
Donut Hole 2024 is a short animation produced by the renowned studio Production I.G, released to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the music project Project Itoh. Directed by Ryotaro Makihara, the work serves as a visual companion to a song by the artist Ado, blending the studio's signature fluid character animation with a distinct, melancholy aesthetic that reflects the themes of alienation and introspection found in the original Project Itoh literary universe.
The piece was designed to evoke a sense of fleeting memory and urban solitude, utilizing a muted color palette and deliberate pacing to contrast with the high-energy nature of contemporary music videos. Upon its release, it was received as a sophisticated technical achievement that successfully bridged the gap between commercial music promotion and high-art animation, earning praise for its atmosphere and the seamless integration of visual storytelling with its musical score.
