Doomed Megalopolis

Doomed Megalopolis, released as a four-part original video animation series in 1991, serves as a high-budget adaptation of Hiroshi Aramata’s epic historical fantasy novel Teito Monogatari. Produced by the studio Madhouse under the direction of Rintaro, the project was intended to capture the scope and atmosphere of the original literature, blending occult mysticism with the architectural transformation of Tokyo in the early 20th century. It stands as a significant example of the ambition found in early 1990s Japanese animation, focusing on the dark intersection of folklore, historical events like the Great Kanto Earthquake, and supernatural forces.

The aesthetic of the series is defined by dark, intricate character designs and a dense, ominous atmosphere that differentiates it from the more commercial anime trends of the era. The production team utilized traditional cel animation techniques to emphasize the urban decay and mystical grandiosity central to the narrative. Upon release, the series garnered attention for its mature tone and technical proficiency, eventually becoming a cult classic that contributed to the rise of supernatural horror as a distinct subgenre within the OVA format during the decade.
