The "loosely science-fiction adventure" is set in the summer sometime in the 21st century. Tokyo's Shinjuku ward has become a wasteland, void of all humans due to an unexplained catastrophe. What remains are these strange creatures such as "Donyatsu," the half-cat, half-doughnut hybrid, and "Begaru," a feline bagel composite.

Where it came from
Donyatsu originated as a manga series by Yusuke Kozaki, first serialized in Young Gangan in 2011, before being adapted into a series of short-form anime episodes by the studio Gathering in 2013. The story depicts a post-apocalyptic Tokyo populated by odd, donut-shaped animal hybrids, blending surreal, cute aesthetics with a desolate, quiet atmosphere.
The character designs are heavily influenced by the distinct visual style of Yusuke Kozaki, who is better known for his character work in video games like Fire Emblem and No More Heroes. Kozaki intended for the series to contrast the whimsical, pastry-based nature of the creatures with the grim, abandoned urban landscape, a juxtaposition that garnered a cult following among fans of minimalist and offbeat animation.
