Where it came from
The 1988 film Door is a Japanese psychological horror production helmed by director Banmei Takahashi and produced under the auspices of NHK Enterprises. Emerging from the late Showa era, the film reflects a growing societal anxiety in Japan regarding urban isolation and the encroaching dangers of the outside world, manifesting as a home-invasion thriller that subverts traditional domestic safety.
Takahashi designed the film to function as a grueling, claustrophobic experience, utilizing the simple premise of an unwelcome visitor to tap into deep-seated fears of vulnerability within high-rise apartment living. While it initially struggled to find a wide international audience upon its release, it has since been recognized by genre enthusiasts for its unrelenting tension and sharp social commentary on the breakdown of neighborly cohesion.
