Doraemon: The Day When I Was Born

Released in March 2002 as a theatrical short, Doraemon: The Day When I Was Born serves as a sentimental installment in the long-running Doraemon franchise. The film was produced by Shin-Ei Animation and directed by Shinichi Watanabe, designed to coincide with the release of the feature-length film Doraemon: Nobita in the Robot Kingdom. It focuses on the emotional backstory of Doraemon’s creation, grounding the futuristic character in a narrative of connection and belonging that resonates with the series' core themes of friendship.

The film’s aesthetic adheres to the classic 2000s animation style associated with the franchise’s television series, maintaining the iconic character designs established by Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko under the pseudonym Fujiko F. Fujio. Upon its release, the short was received warmly by longtime fans of the series, who appreciated its focus on the poignant, often overlooked origin story of the robotic cat, serving as a nostalgic bridge between the original manga legacy and the early 2000s animation era.
