Where it came from
Doraemon the Movie: Nobita's Chronicle of the Moon Exploration was produced by Shin-Ei Animation as the 39th installment in the long-running Doraemon feature film series. Released in 2019, the film marked a significant departure for the franchise by tasking novelist Mizuki Tsujimura with writing the screenplay. Her involvement was intended to bring a more sophisticated, character-driven narrative to the iconic sci-fi premise, focusing on themes of imagination, the connection between friendship and folklore, and the exploration of the lunar surface.
Directed by Shinnosuke Yakuwa, the film maintains the classic aesthetic of the modern Doraemon film series while integrating a more poignant, emotional arc. The design work honors the legacy of Fujiko F. Fujio’s original character illustrations while utilizing updated animation techniques to render the fantastical lunar kingdom of Luna. Upon its release, the film was well received by critics and audiences in Japan for successfully balancing the series' signature adventurous spirit with a contemplative story that resonated with both children and long-time adult fans.
