Where it came from
Encouragement of Climb, known in Japan as Yama no Susume, began as a manga series by Siro before being adapted into a television anime. The third season, produced by studio 8-bit and released in 2018, continued the narrative of Aoi and Hinata, two childhood friends who rekindle their bond through the hobby of mountaineering. This iteration of the series is noted for its transition into a longer, full-length format, allowing for deeper character development and more detailed depictions of the Japanese outdoors.
The production design by 8-bit was praised for its aesthetic consistency and the intentional way it captured the technical aspects of hiking and climbing. Under the direction of Yusuke Yamamoto, the series sought to balance quiet, slice-of-life storytelling with vibrant, immersive visuals of natural landscapes. It was well-received by audiences for its gentle pacing and the authentic, encouraging tone that defined the series' ongoing exploration of friendship and personal growth.
