Extra Olympia Kyklos

Extra Olympia Kyklos was produced by Dentsu and aired in 2020 as a humorous, short-form television series based on the manga by Mari Yamazaki. The project emerged as a creative blend of stop-motion animation and live-action segments, designed to bridge the gap between classical Greek history and modern Japanese societal themes. Its production was intended to coincide with the buildup to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, utilizing the historical context of the ancient games to offer a satirical commentary on the complexities of the modern world.

The series was directed by Ryoichi Kurihara, who aimed for a distinctive aesthetic that juxtaposed the rigidity of ancient statues with the fluid, often chaotic nature of contemporary life. The visual language of the show relies heavily on the clay-style character designs that capture the absurdity of the protagonist's journey through time. Upon its release, it was received as a niche but clever piece of experimental storytelling, praised for its dry wit and its ability to condense philosophical inquiries about sportsmanship and culture into brief, punchy episodes.
