With no soccer accomplishments to speak of during the entirety of Sumire Suo’s junior high school years, the young wing gets an odd offer. Suo’s main rival, Midori Soshizaki, invites her to join up on the same team in high school, with a promise that she’ll never let Suo “play alone.” It’s an earnest offer, but the question is whether Suo will take her up on it. Thus the curtain opens on a story that collects an enormous cast of individual soccer-playing personalities!

Where it came from
Farewell, My Dear Cramer was produced by LIDENFILMS and released in 2021 as an anime adaptation of Naoshi Arakawa’s manga series. The project serves as a thematic successor to Arakawa’s previous work, drawing inspiration from his earlier manga 'Sayonara, Football' to expand upon the competitive world of high school girls' soccer in Japan. The narrative was developed to highlight the technical intricacies and personal stakes involved in the sport, aiming to bridge the gap between sports-focused drama and character-driven storytelling.
The series design aesthetic reflects a grounded approach to athletic movement, with LIDENFILMS focusing on capturing the fluidity of soccer matches while maintaining the distinct visual style characteristic of Arakawa’s character designs. Upon its release, the adaptation was received as a sincere effort to bring representation to women's football in media. While it faced comparisons to other sports anime, it was noted for its commitment to exploring the professional and emotional challenges faced by its young protagonists as they navigate the developing landscape of the sport.
