Bunzou High School is welcoming its new first-year students. One of them, Koshiyama Shiki, is chosen to participate against his will in an impromptu fast-buzzing quiz meet by the president of the Quiz Bowl Circle. As a quiet boy who loves reading and doesn't want to stand out, Shiki is overwhelmed, but his classmate, Fukami Mari, is able to hit the buzzer and answer questions before the full question is given. As he watches her, Shiki realizes that there's a point in each question where the answer becomes certain.

Where it came from
Fastest Finger First, known in Japan as Nana Maru San Batsu, is a 2017 television anime series produced by TMS Entertainment. Based on the manga series by Iqura Sugimoto, the show centers on the competitive world of high school quiz bowls, exploring the intense intellectual rigor and strategy required for buzzer-based trivia. The animation focuses on capturing the tension of rapid-fire question-and-answer exchanges, highlighting the camaraderie and rivalry that develop among the members of a school club dedicated to competitive quizzing.
The production sought to bring a niche subculture into the spotlight, treating quiz bowl mechanics with the same gravity usually reserved for sports anime. The character designs maintain a clean, recognizable aesthetic typical of mid-2010s youth-oriented series, aiming to make the fast-paced, often esoteric nature of competitive quizzing accessible and engaging to a broader audience. Upon its release, the series was noted for its focus on the technicalities of buzzers and game theory, carving out a distinct space within the sports and school-life genres.
