Feather robe from heaven

The Feather Robe from Heaven, known as Hagoromo, is a short film produced by Geidai Animation, the animation wing of the Tokyo University of the Arts. It serves as a modern cinematic interpretation of the classic Japanese Noh play, which centers on a celestial maiden who loses her enchanted feather robe and is unable to return to the heavens until a local fisherman restores it to her. The production was created as part of the university's initiative to bridge traditional performance arts with contemporary experimental animation techniques.

The film is notable for its distinct aesthetic, which diverges from mainstream commercial anime in favor of a textured, artistic sensibility that evokes the ethereal nature of the original folktale. By focusing on the interplay of movement and silence, the animation team sought to capture the meditative quality of Noh theater. It was received as a significant academic contribution to the preservation of folklore through digital media, showcasing the technical growth of students and faculty within the university's graduate animation program.
