Where it came from
Final Fantasy XIV: CHOOSE YOUR LIFE is a short promotional animated film released in 2017 to celebrate the popular MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. Produced by the Japanese animation studio Craftar, the piece was commissioned by Square Enix to reach a broader audience beyond the game's core player base. It serves as a narrative bridge, illustrating the universal appeal of the gaming experience by contrasting the daily grind of ordinary life with the immersive, communal adventure found within the digital world of Eorzea.
The animation focuses on the emotional resonance of character customization and the social bonds formed through online play. Utilizing Craftar’s signature blend of 3D computer graphics and cel-shaded aesthetics, the short sought to capture the high-fantasy spirit of the game while grounding it in a relatable, real-world context. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans for its polished production values and its success in distilling the core 'Choose Your Life' theme of the game’s expansion marketing at the time.
