Where it came from
Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn - Prologue is a short original net animation produced by the studio Satelight, released in early 2019 to serve as a narrative prequel to the final downloadable content expansion for the video game Final Fantasy XV. It was commissioned by Square Enix to provide essential backstory for the game's primary antagonist, Ardyn Izunia, chronicling his tragic transition from a healer of the people to a being consumed by darkness.
The animation features a somber, gothic aesthetic designed to contrast with the high-adventure tone of the main game. Satelight was tasked with translating the lore established in the game's supplementary materials into a visual format, focusing on character-driven tragedy. The piece was generally received by the Final Fantasy community as an effective, if brief, expansion of the series' mythology, providing depth to a character whose history had previously been relegated to text-based summaries.
