GeGeGe no Kitaro

The 2018 iteration of GeGeGe no Kitaro was produced by Toei Animation to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the franchise's first television broadcast. This series serves as a modern reimagining of Shigeru Mizuki's seminal manga, which originally debuted in the 1960s to bridge the gap between traditional Japanese folklore and contemporary societal anxieties. By updating the setting to the 21st century, the studio aimed to tackle modern issues such as internet isolation, social media toxicity, and corporate exploitation through the lens of the supernatural.

Directed by Kouji Ogawa, the series design team intentionally refined the aesthetic of the characters to be both accessible to a new generation of viewers and faithful to Mizuki's grotesque yet endearing original illustrations. The production is noted for its sharper, more vibrant animation style compared to its predecessors, which helped it receive widespread critical acclaim for its thematic depth and willingness to explore darker, more mature narrative arcs. It was well received both domestically and internationally, successfully introducing the yokai genre to a global audience long familiar with Mizuki's legacy.
