Where it came from
The Lights of Lantern Rite is a promotional animated short produced by miHoYo, the studio behind the global phenomenon Genshin Impact. Released in early 2021, the short was created to celebrate the inaugural Lantern Rite festival within the game, a narrative event inspired by the real-world LNY festivities. Its production sought to immerse players in the vibrant cultural atmosphere of Liyue Harbor, establishing a tradition of high-quality, standalone animated shorts that expand upon the game's world-building beyond standard gameplay.
The visual direction focuses on the synthesis of traditional aesthetic elements with the modern 3D anime style characteristic of miHoYo's in-house animation team. By emphasizing atmospheric lighting and character-driven vignettes, the studio intended to ground the game's expansive fantasy setting in a more intimate, character-focused light. The piece was well-received by the fan community, setting a precedent for the company's subsequent efforts to leverage high-end animation to deepen player investment in the game's recurring seasonal events.
