Where it came from
Released in 1984 as the first original video animation for the Ginga Hyouryuu Vifam series, Katue kara no Tayori serves as a bridging narrative between the television series and its subsequent sequels. Produced by Sunrise, the project was designed to satisfy the demand of the show’s dedicated fanbase, who had become deeply invested in the survival journey of the teenage protagonists after the abrupt end of the original broadcast.
The OVA utilizes a compilation-style format combined with new footage to provide a poignant look at the cast's life after their interstellar ordeal. The production reflects the mid-1980s shift in the Japanese animation industry, where studios began leveraging the nascent home video market to extend the lifecycles of popular mecha properties beyond their initial network runs. It remains a notable example of early OVA storytelling aimed at sustaining long-form character development.
