Where it came from
Ginga Hyouryuu Vifam: Chicago Super Police 13 was released in 1985 as a specialized original video animation tied to the Ginga Hyouryuu Vifam science fiction series. Produced during a period when the mecha genre was exploring more grounded, character-driven narratives, this particular entry shifted focus toward a police-procedural aesthetic, blending the series' established futuristic setting with the gritty sensibilities of 1980s urban action cinema.
The design of this iteration was heavily influenced by the contemporary Japanese fascination with American pulp detective stories. The visual direction aimed to contrast the series' space-faring roots with the claustrophobic, rain-slicked atmosphere of a reimagined Chicago. While it serves as a departure from the main series' primary plot, it is often studied by fans for its ambitious stylistic pivot and its attempt to integrate established mecha character archetypes into a completely different genre convention.
