Glass Fleet: The Legend of the Wind of the Universe Specials

Glass Fleet: The Legend of the Wind of the Universe was produced by Studio GONZO and released in 2006, followed by these special episodes in 2007. The series was a joint venture between the animation studio and the creators of the original visual novel, intended to bridge high-fantasy aesthetics with space opera tropes. It emerged during a period of experimentation for GONZO, as the studio sought to integrate 3D computer graphics with traditional cel-style animation, resulting in a distinct, often polarized visual identity that favored ornate, baroque ship designs and sweeping planetary landscapes.

The specials were designed to expand upon the lore of the series, providing additional character depth and narrative closure to the original twenty-six-episode run. Character designs were handled by Eiji Hashimoto, who drew inspiration from neoclassical art and classical European costuming to emphasize the aristocratic nature of the show's warring factions. Upon release, the series and its subsequent specials were noted for their ambitious art style and unconventional storytelling, garnering a dedicated cult following among fans of space-themed anime who appreciated the studio's willingness to depart from traditional genre standards.
