Glass and Kumo

Glass and Kumo, known in English as Glass and Clouds, was produced by students and faculty at the Tokyo University of the Arts, commonly referred to as Geidai. This project emerged from the university’s renowned animation program, which emphasizes traditional craft, experimental visual storytelling, and a deep focus on the artistic evolution of the medium. The film is characterized by a deliberate, evocative aesthetic that reflects the institution's commitment to nurturing individual voice over commercial animation standards.

The film is celebrated for its unique visual language, which often blends lyrical narrative structures with distinct, hand-drawn textures. As a product of an academic setting, the design philosophy behind the work prioritizes artistic exploration and atmospheric tension rather than mainstream genre tropes. It was received within the animation community as a sophisticated example of collegiate filmmaking, earning praise for its nuanced direction and the technical precision of its independent production process.
