Where it came from
Glasslip was produced by P.A.Works and released in 2014, marking a departure from the studio's typically high-energy or workplace-centric narratives. Directed by Junji Nishimura, the series was conceived as a contemplative slice-of-life drama set in the coastal town of Mikuni, Fukui. The production aimed to capture a hazy, nostalgic atmosphere, focusing on the sensory experiences of a group of high school students, particularly their protagonist's ability to see fragments of the future through glass reflections.
The series received a polarized reception upon its broadcast, with many viewers finding its abstract pacing and elliptical storytelling challenging to follow. While critics praised the studio's signature lush background art and detailed character designs, the plot was frequently criticized for being intentionally vague and failing to resolve its supernatural premises. Despite its mixed legacy, it remains a notable example of P.A.Works' experimentation with atmospheric, character-driven storytelling during the mid-2010s.
