Where it came from
Glass Mask, the 1984 anime adaptation of Suzue Miuchi’s long-running manga series, was produced by Eiken and first broadcast on Nippon Television. It follows the dramatic journey of Maya Kitajima, a young girl with an innate, transformative talent for acting, as she strives to land the legendary role of the Scarlet Angel in the play known as the Glass Mask. The series emerged during a golden era of shojo manga adaptations, capturing the intense, often melodramatic emotional stakes of the theatrical world.
The character designs for this iteration distilled the high-drama aesthetic of Miuchi’s source material into a distinctive 1980s animation style, characterized by wide, expressive eyes and fluid transformations that mirrored the protagonist's chameleon-like performance abilities. While the pacing and production values reflect the technical limitations of 1980s television animation, the series was well-received for its faithful capture of the source material's heart and its gripping depiction of the competitive pursuit of artistic excellence, cementing the franchise's status as a classic of the genre.
