Glass no Chikyuu o Sukue Unico Tokubetsu-hen

Glass no Chikyuu o Sukue Unico Tokubetsu-hen, released in 2000, serves as a special animation project featuring the iconic character Unico, created by the legendary manga artist Osamu Tezuka. This production emerged from the enduring legacy of the 1980s Unico films, seeking to reintroduce the innocent, unicorn-like protagonist to a new generation while emphasizing environmental themes. Its creation was heavily influenced by the desire to highlight the fragile beauty of the Earth, utilizing a visual style that balances Tezuka's signature rounded, expressive character designs with the lush, painterly backgrounds characteristic of late 20th-century Japanese animation.

The film was received as a nostalgic and poignant addition to the Tezuka canon, praised primarily for its earnest moral messaging and its preservation of the gentle aesthetic established in the earlier feature films. While it did not reach the same widespread cultural visibility as the original 1981 theatrical release, it remains a respected piece among animation historians and Tezuka enthusiasts. The project is often noted for how it maintains the emotional core of Unico—a being whose presence brings happiness but also displacement—within the context of modern concerns regarding ecological preservation.
