Where it came from
Glass no Kamen Desu ga was produced in 2013 by the animation studio DLE as a parody spin-off of Suzue Miuchi’s long-running and iconic shojo manga, Glass no Kamen (Glass Mask). The series was created to capitalize on the enduring cultural footprint of the original dramatic source material, reinterpreting the intense, theatrical struggles of aspiring actress Maya Kitajima through the lens of DLE’s signature Flash-animation style, which relies on surreal humor and minimalist aesthetic choices.
The series was directed by Frogman, a pivotal figure at DLE known for his subversive and comedic sensibilities. By stripping away the high-stakes melodrama of the original work and replacing it with absurd, self-aware gags and rapid-fire dialogue, the show functioned as a playful homage for long-time fans. Upon its release, it was received as a humorous curiosity that highlighted the dramatic tropes of the 1970s source material, providing a lighthearted counterpoint to the more serious tone of previous adaptations.
