Granblue Fantasy: The Animation Season 2

Granblue Fantasy: The Animation Season 2 was produced by Studio MAPPA and released in 2019, serving as a direct continuation of the series based on the popular Cygames role-playing game. While the first season was handled by A-1 Pictures, the production shift to MAPPA brought a distinct aesthetic evolution to the Sky Realm, focusing on the high-fantasy journey of the protagonist Gran and the enigmatic Lyria as they traverse floating islands. The series aimed to translate the game's expansive lore and character-driven narrative into a cohesive television format, catering specifically to an established fanbase familiar with the source material's visual identity.

The animation direction for this season emphasized dynamic action sequences and character expressions that mirrored the intricate art style found in the original game's illustrations. As with many adaptations of long-running mobile games, the reception was largely framed by the expectations of the existing player base, who valued the preservation of the game's core character dynamics and world-building. MAPPA’s contribution is often cited for its effort to maintain the series' high-fantasy tone, balancing the episodic nature of the travelers' journey with the overarching geopolitical conflicts within the world of Granblue.
