Where it came from
Gundam Build Divers was produced by Sunrise and released in 2018 as part of the broader Gundam Build series, which centers on the concept of Gunpla Battle—a virtual sport where users pilot custom-built Gundam model kits. This iteration shifted the focus toward a massive multiplayer online environment known as GBN, moving away from the tournament-style combat of its predecessors to explore themes of socialization, virtual communities, and the evolving relationship between builders and their digital avatars.
The series was directed by Shinya Watada, who aimed to modernize the franchise for a younger, digitally native audience by emphasizing customization and accessibility. While the show was praised for its vibrant aesthetic and creative mobile suit designs, it received a mixed reception from long-time fans who felt the lower-stakes narrative lacked the tension found in earlier entries within the Gundam canon.
