The story is set two years after the story of Gundam Build Divers, with a new version of the "Gunpla Battle Nexus Online" (GBN) game, and new Divers: Hiroto, a lone Diver who plays like a mercenary; Kazami, a wanderer who goes between parties; May, a mysterious solo Diver who participates in Gunpla Battles all day; and Parviz, a beginner Diver who has an introverted attitude but desires co-op play. While all four live solitary existences, they are brought together by circumstance to form a team in an experience that goes beyond GBN.

Where it came from
Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE was released in 2019 as a direct sequel to the 2018 series Gundam Build Divers. Produced by Sunrise, the series was designed to shift the tone of the Build franchise toward a more mature, narrative-driven exploration of the virtual reality gaming premise. It was released as an ONA (Original Net Animation) on the GundamInfo YouTube channel, marking a strategic pivot in how Bandai Namco distributed its flagship mecha content to a global audience.
The series was directed by Shinya Watada, who sought to blend the customary high-stakes action of the Gundam universe with deeper character studies centered on a mysterious group of players known as the Build Divers. The character designs were handled by Kazuhiro Hara, who focused on providing a distinct visual identity for the protagonist Hiroto Kuga and his party. Upon release, the series was well-received by critics and fans alike for its tighter storytelling and emotional resonance compared to its predecessor, often being cited for its effective use of the episodic ONA format to build suspense.
