Where it came from
Released in 2018, the Gundam Build Divers Prologue serves as the foundational ONA for the Build Divers anime series. It was created as a narrative bridge to introduce the GBN, or Gunpla Battle Nexus, an immersive virtual reality world where players pilot customized plastic models. This prologue focuses on establishing the technological stakes and the social landscape of this digital realm, effectively setting the stage for the broader series.
The animation was produced by Sunrise, the studio synonymous with the Gundam franchise, with a visual style designed to emphasize the fluidity and customization potential of the Gunpla kits. The project aimed to shift the focus from the traditional military conflict of the franchise toward a more hobbyist, competitive gaming aesthetic. Upon release, it was received as a lighthearted expansion of the Build sub-series, successfully transitioning the franchise into the contemporary era of competitive online gaming culture.
