Where it came from
Gundam Build Fighters: GM's Counterattack was released in 2017 as a standalone ONA project, serving as a direct sequel to the original Gundam Build Fighters series. Produced by studio Sunrise and directed by Kenji Nagasaki, the film sought to bring back the original cast to address lingering narrative threads and showcase new mecha designs, capitalizing on the immense popularity of the Gunpla-themed sub-franchise which focused on the hobby of building and battling plastic models.
The film was designed to bridge the gap between the original series and its successors, blending the familiar lighthearted tone of the Build Fighters universe with more polished animation sequences. It was received warmly by fans who appreciated the return of protagonist Iori Sei and the opportunity to see updated suit designs in action, solidifying the Build Fighters legacy as a foundational pillar for the broader Gundam franchise's engagement with its model-kit culture.
