The story is set in the near future when GunPla Battles, competitions that pit Gundam plastic models against each other, have become popular worldwide in the "Second GunPla Boom." Sei Iori, a first-year middle-school student and the only son of a model shop owner, is talented at building GunPla, but inexperienced in the GunPla Battles. He encounters a mysterious boy named Reiji, who happens to be an accomplished Gundam Fighter. Together, they strive for the GunPla Battle world championships.

Where it came from
Gundam Build Fighters was produced by Sunrise and first aired in 2013 as part of the 35th anniversary celebrations of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. Rather than following the traditional war drama themes of the series, the show introduced a lighthearted, tournament-focused premise where characters engage in competitive battles using custom-built Gunpla models that are brought to life through advanced scanning technology.
Directed by Kenji Nagasaki and featuring series composition by Yosuke Kuroda, the production was designed to bridge the gap between long-time fans and a new, younger demographic. The series was well-received by critics and audiences alike, largely due to its high-octane animation, the meta-commentary on the hobby of model building, and its focus on the creative passion behind custom kit-bashing.
