Provenance

Where it came from

Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE serves as the second installment in the Build Divers sub-series, released as an ONA in 2020. Produced by Sunrise, the series was designed to shift the tone of the Build franchise toward a more serious, high-stakes narrative. It follows the protagonist Hiroto and his team, BUILD DIVERS, as they traverse the virtual world of Gunpla Battle Nexus Online, weaving together themes of player camaraderie and the existential stakes of artificial intelligence.

The series was directed by Shinya Watada, who sought to leverage the popularity of the preceding Build Divers series while introducing a more intricate, mystery-driven plot structure. Its visual direction emphasized the integration of diverse mobile suit designs, reflecting the modular nature of the Gunpla hobby. The production was well-received by fans for its mature storytelling and character development, marking a distinct evolution in the franchise's approach to the meta-narrative of Gunpla building.
