In turn of the 20th Century Japan, a period characterized by widespread innovation and social restructuring, Benio Hanamura endeavors to take modernization to new heights. With a tomboy nature, Benio rails against traditional ideas that women should take care of the home—serving their husbands rather than pursuing their own dreams. Her values as a modern woman come under fire as the one man who supports her independence, Lieutenant Shinobu Ijuin, goes missing in action. Resurfacing back in Japan, Shinobu has lost all memory of his true identity. In this stunning sequel, will Benio be able to reconnect with Shinobu before she is married off to a new man?

Where it came from
Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern – Part 2, produced by Nippon Animation in 2018, serves as the concluding chapter of the two-part film adaptation of Waki Yamato’s classic 1970s manga. Originally conceived as a historical romance set in the Taisho era, the project was revitalized for the modern era to capture the nuance of the original source material’s conclusion, which was famously abbreviated in the 1978 television anime adaptation.
The production sought to balance period-accurate aesthetics with a contemporary animation style, focusing heavily on the character development of the protagonist, Benio Hanamura. Directed and scripted by Toshiaki Kidokoro, the film was received as a faithful homage to Yamato’s work, earning appreciation for its emotional depth and the decision to finally adapt the manga’s original ending for the screen.
