Where it came from
Released in October 2014, HappinessCharge Precure! Ningyou no Kuni no Ballerina serves as the seventeenth feature film in the long-running Pretty Cure franchise. Produced by Toei Animation, the film was designed to bridge the gap between the mid-season point and the finale of the television series, offering a standalone narrative centered on themes of persistence and the emotional bonds between performers. The creative team aimed to leverage the magical girl genre's tropes while integrating a specific motif involving dolls and ballet to evoke a sense of theatrical elegance distinct from the main series' primary themes of dancing and fashion.
The film was directed by Chiaki Kon, known for her work on various character-driven series, and features character designs by Masahiro Sato, who sought to maintain the high-energy visual aesthetic of the television iteration while elevating the animation quality for the cinematic format. Upon its release, the film was received as a standard entry in the franchise's filmography, noted by critics for its emotive storytelling and the technical execution of its climactic battle sequences, which expanded upon the aesthetic established by the HappinessCharge season.
